Bojan Gorenec: CAPTAIN AND SAILOR
Series of 43 ink jet prints

In the days before photography was used for reproduction and documentation, graphic prints which incorporated drawings of works were used as minimized copies to illustrate, present and demonstrate visual art. These copies could travel around Europe and elsewhere.

My intention in this project was to use such indirectness with my published analysis of The Cremaster Cycle, a work by American artist Matthew Barney. I created photographically and digitally processed documentation and an interpretation in the form of drawings and paintings, which are presented in the form of ink-jet prints. I used inscenations, simulating scenes, and other approaches which enabled me to derive the form of the analysis in my own way and to interlace the text with representations of scenes, which can function as its performance. One of the results is the publication of my book in connection with the work of the contemporary author, who is for the first time critically presented in Slovenia. At the same time, 43 images gained through this process were exhibited in Škuc Gallery.

The work which served as the basis for my project is both complex and visionary, given how art has developed and is being categorised. All of my work, including textual and visual, was aimed at testing the limits of authorship and shaping the author's autonomy.
